Late
January 2024
• Two
new papers in Organometallics!
Jorge led the effort on
the first (link), with
help from Andrew and
Hannah -- it's the first
publication for those
two. A nice example of
bifunctional catalysis,
where the Lewis acidic
Pt binds the nitrile so
the P-OH nucleophile can
attack it to form a
metallacycle. Water then
attacks at P to open the
ring and make an iminol
complex. Tautomerization
then gives the amide.
Result: addition of
water across the CN
triple without direct
attack -- it all happens
with the SPO phosphorus
as the water shuttle.
The second comes
from big teamwork
between Ryan and
multiple collaborators
(Russ and Arnie for DFT
and X-ray as usual, plus
Heather
and Mick at DOW
for high-pressure NMR
and catalysis
screening). Our chiral
phosphiranes were poor
ligands in Rh-catalyzed
hydroformylation, and
now we know why...CO
displaced the ligand
from the metal.
• Congratulations to
former senior thesis
